Diversity versus Confidence : 1939-1945

The Allied elites were almost as unwilling to put the Diversity rhetoric of their Atlantic Charter and the Four Freedoms into actual practise as were the Axis elites.

That meant that they hoped that their victory in WWII over the forces of unbounded Confidence could be achieved by a quite limited war, at least on the Morality front.

But once out among the general public, all that Four Freedoms talk could not be contained like a genie in a bottle, making WWII a Total War intellectually --- no matter how muted it seemed at the time.

As Black activists insisted then and ever since, there needed to be a Double Victory, ending Axis racism abroad and Allied racism at home.

As a result, this total intellectual campaign - I hate to be forced into calling an effort to welcome greater diversity and tolerance a "war" - happened almost unconsciously and  very very slowly, inside the entire world's minds ---- and at hard right angles to the limited military war...
