Hitler feed into a pre-existing fear among Protestant northern Germans in Mittel Europa that they were 'surrounded' by  swarthy Catholics and Orthodox on all sides.

From 1850 onwards, many of those worried Germans fled to Mittel Amerika , out of the pan and into the fire, because it was a land where the relatively small band of white Protestants Americans also felt surrounded and threatened by large numbers of swarthy French and Spanish Catholics from the north and the south.
